The South West Region is characterised by its diverse and intriguing coastline. However with Climate Change inevitable, we must plan to protect the natural and built environment. Planning for this change is often difficult, complex, costly and can be emotionally charged. In this seminar we aim to set out ideas, the latest research and practical examples of how to deal with this climate change driven topic.

This is part 3 of 3 webinars on this topic

We will invite feedback and discussion from attendees during the session via the chat function and we will provide an opportunity for a Q&A with the presenters after the presentations.

  • Welcome by Corine Dyke, RTPI SW Regional Activities Committee
  • Presentation 1: The national Shoreline Management Plan Refresh, Climate change predictions and the interaction between coastal and terrestrial processes. Justin Ridgewell, Environment Agency
  • Presentation 2: Coastal Change management Areas. Dr Tim Poate, University of Plymouth
  • Presentation 3: Coastal Change Management Areas; a Local Authority perspective. Ian Rowland, Torridge District Council

Coastal Advisor for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

With an academic background in environmental, coastal and marine sciences, Justin has over 15 years’ experience as a coastal management practitioner, within the flood and coastal erosion risk management sector. This has included public and private sector roles, both in the UK and overseas. His principal experience relates to development of Shoreline Management Plans, strategies and the monitoring and evidence programmes which support them, but he has also led and supervised the design and construction of coastal defence and adaptation works. An important current area of work for Justin is the development of guidance and policy relating to coastal change, adaptation, nature-based solutions and the implementation of Coastal Change Management Areas for planning. In addition, he also maintains an incident management role as a Flood Warning Duty Officer for Cornwall. More broadly he has interests in marine and coastal conservation and the development of sustainable management practices relating to these sensitive and dynamic environments. Tim’s a coastal scientist whose research focuses on storm impacts and long term morphodynamics within the larger context of coastal processes. He has studied the impacts of offshore renewables, the response of storm events on gravel beaches and the role of intertidal rocky platforms on wave attenuation. In Plymouth since 2008, Tim previously worked for the Channel Coastal Observatory managing their nearshore wave buoy network.
For SWEEP Tim is delivering an operational wave model with a focus on wave overtopping in the South West. He is also working with regional authorities to help develop Coastal Change Management Areas (CCMAs) using the latest climate scenario projections. For CMAR Tim has worked with NGOs & GOs on intertidal habitat restoration projects, rip current studies, storm event analysis and bathymetric surveys in the UK, France and New Zealand.
