  • 12:30 - 12:45 - Juliet Bidgood, Architect and Urbanist. As one of the Design Review Panel Chairs for this project, Juliet will reflect upon the key design/ concept planning elements that came out of the site analysis.

Senior Specialist Homes England

Dan is a chartered town planner with over 25 years' experience in local government, working in planning policy and development management, but primarily in building conservation and urban design. During this time, he was also a part time senior lecturer in the School of the Built Environment at Birmingham City University, and was a visiting teacher at the University of Birmingham for 25 years. He is now an associate lecturer with the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University. Currently, he works for Homes England as a senior manager in the Master Development & Design team. He is involved, principally, in the agency's design quality assessment and project master planning work.

Associate CEO of Design:Midlands (DM)

Specialising in place making with a passion for architecture and urban design, Julie believes that design-led methods will support better quality places through the planning system. Julie is Associate CEO of Design:Midlands (DM) and has supported the charity for over 12 years. Julie manages c 60 design reviews annually, notably large-scale new communities, infrastructure and public realm projects as well as individual buildings of strategic importance. Julie has recently led on the Reg. 18 programme of design reviews with South Glos Council – securing promoter/applicant buy-in to the process, Design Review Panel engagement and consistent reporting that will support the preparation of Local Plan policy. Julie also leads the Design Network in supporting Homes England’s use of Building for a Healthy Life as an assessment tool for the disposal of sites for housing across England. She produced bi-annual Design Quality Audits for HE to evidence uplift in design quality and prepared the methodology to manage the assessment framework. Julie is also on the High Street Task Force.

Principal Project & Urban Design Officer - South Gloucestershire Council

Dan Jones is a Principal Planning and Urban Design Officer in the Major Sites Team at South Gloucestershire Council. Dan has an array of planning related experience having worked across local government, consultancy and in the development sector. Starting his career at North Kesteven District Council in the local plans team, before progressing to Peterborough City Council where he worked in development management on Hampton, the 4th Township. After taking a career break to undertake an Urban Design diploma at the University of the West of England, Dan had a short spell in consultancy before becoming Planning & Design Manager at Crest Nicholson (Southwest Region). Now with South Gloucestershire Council, Dan has undertaken various functions for the Major Sites & Local Plans teams including, urban design advice, policy formulation, CIL officer, and Infrastructure Planning.

Architect & Urban Designer

Juliet Bidgood is an architect/urban designer and RIBA Client Adviser based in Somerset. She is experienced in working with communities, enterprises and organisations to set out and realise shared visions and create engaging places. She is an expert in design policy, design strategy and brief development. She is knowledgeable about sustainable design for public buildings and spaces, and residential neighbourhoods. A design review panel chair since 2010 Juliet led the co-design of the West of England Placemaking Charter. Formerly a senior government advisor at CABE and a founder of the award-winning collaborative practice muf Architecture/Art.
