Robert L. Sumwalt
Chairman, NTSB
Robert L. Sumwalt was sworn in as the 14th chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board on August 10, 2017, after being nominated by President Donald J. Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He was reappointed as chairman by President Trump in August 2019, after being unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Mr. Sumwalt began his tenure at the NTSB in August 2006 when President George W. Bush appointed him to the Board and designated him as Vice Chairman of the Board. In November 2011, President Barack Obama reappointed Mr. Sumwalt to an additional five-year term as Board Member.
Chairman Sumwalt is a fierce advocate for improving safety in all modes of transportation, including teen driver safety, impaired driving, distractions in transportation, and several aviation and rail safety initiatives.
Before joining the NTSB, Mr. Sumwalt was a pilot for 32 years, including 24 years with Piedmont Airlines and US Airways. He accumulated over 14,000 flight hours. During his tenure at US Airways, he worked on special assignment to the flight safety department and served on the airline’s Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) monitoring team.
Following his airline career, Sumwalt managed the corporate aviation department for a Fortune 500 energy company.
In other notable accomplishments, he chaired the Air Line Pilots Association’s Human Factors and Training Group and co-founded the association’s critical incident response program. He also spent eight years as a consultant to NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) and has written extensively on aviation safety matters. He has co-authored a book on aircraft accidents and has published more than 100 articles on transportation safety and aircraft accident investigation.
Chairman Sumwalt earned an undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Aeronautical Science (with Distinction) from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, with concentrations in aviation/aerospace safety systems and human factors aviation systems. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina, and an honorary doctorate from Embry-Riddle. He is an inductee into the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame.

Pete Bunce
President and CEO, GAMA
In April 2005, Peter (Pete) Bunce became President and CEO of GAMA, which has North American headquarters in Washington, D.C. and European/Middle East headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. He and the GAMA staff travel worldwide engaging regulators, policymakers, and elected officials to promote general aviation and advance the interests of GAMA’s global membership of more than 100 airframe, avionics, engine, and component manufacturers, as well as the world’s leading business aviation maintenance, repair, and overall companies.
Pete retired from the United States Air Force in March 2005, with his last assignment as the Director of the Air Force Congressional Budget and Appropriations Liaison. During his 26-year Air Force career, Pete flew F-15s and A-10s, while commanding several large operational fighter units.
Pete is an active pilot with more than 7,000 hours in military fighter and training aircraft as well as civil piston, turboprop, and business jet aircraft. He holds an FAA airline transport certificate and seaplane rating, and serves on the board of directors of the Recreational Aviation Foundation, Veterans Airlift Command, the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcon Foundation, America’s Warrior Partnership, and the Air Care Alliance. Pete is also a member of both the FAA’s NextGen Advisory Committee, MITRE Corporation’s Aviation Advisory Committee and the NASA Advisory Council Aeronautics Committee.
Pete was named the 2007 Aviation Industry Leader of the Year by the Living Legends of Aviation. In December 2009, he was awarded the ICAS Sword of Excellence, the air show industry’s premier annual award. In January 2010, he was inducted as one of the 70 Living Legends of Aviation. Pete and his wife Patty reside in Arlington, Virginia, and have six children.

Terry McVenes
President and CEO, RTCA, Inc.
Terry McVenes was named the President and CEO of RTCA, Inc. in November of 2018. Founded in 1935, RTCA is a private, not for profit association that brings together the brightest business, technical, operational, and regulatory experts from across the aviation industry to find common ground for higher levels of performance standards in global aviation.

McVenes came to RTCA after spending the past decade at The Boeing Company, where he held the position of Director of System Safety and Regulatory Affairs. In this position, McVenes directed operations support to assist countries and customers with regulatory approvals to ensure efficient and effective flight operations. He was appointed to that position in November 2009 after a 30-year career as an airline pilot. He was responsible for the execution of the Commercial Airplanes safety, regulatory, and rulemaking initiatives throughout the world. McVenes also led Boeing’s relationships with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Flight Standards Service organization, pilot associations, and other industry groups. He represented Boeing on the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) and the Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) Executive Board.

Prior to joining Boeing, he served as the Executive Air Safety Chairman for the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), representing ALPA pilots in airline safety and engineering matters arising within the industry. McVenes has also served as the industry co-chairman for several FAA Aviation Rulemaking Committees, one of which developed the ASIAS program and its corresponding procedures and operations plan.

McVenes has testified before Congressional committees of both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and has spoken at many international forums on a wide variety of aviation safety topics. He has also authored numerous articles on aviation safety, which have appeared in national and international publications.

In addition to his work in aviation, McVenes has provided expert consultation on safety to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Alliance of Automobile Manufactures, the helicopter safety community, and the medical industry.

In August 2008, McVenes was the recipient of the 2007 ALPA Annual Air Safety Award, ALPA’s highest award for aviation safety work by a line pilot.

He began his airline career in 1978 with Rocky Mountain Airways in Denver, Colorado flying the DHC-6 (Twin Otter) and DHC-7 (Dash 7) aircraft. In March 1985, he was hired by Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), which later merged into US Airways. He is rated on the DHC-7, BAe-146, FK-28, DC-9, MD-80, A-320, and B-737, and has more than 17,000 hours of flight time.

Prior to starting his airline career, McVenes was employed as an engineer for the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Seattle University with a Leadership Specialization, a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado, and the Certificate of Aviation Safety Management from the University of Southern California. He also serves on the Board of Governors for the Flight Safety Foundation.
