Several of the world’s largest PV manufacturers are making the switch to n-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) cells, in search of higher performance and longer lifetimes. With gigawatts of manufacturing capacity up and running in 2023, TOPCon is described by many as a mature technology today. In this pv magazine Webinar, we examine TOPCon’s route to likely market dominance in the next couple of years and prospects for further development.

TOPCon represented at least 20% of the market for silicon solar cells in 2022 and is only set to grow further this year. This webinar will examine the performance and durability advantages that n-type TOPCon cells and modules achieve – with case studies from modules deployed in the Middle East/North Africa region.

We’ll also examine TOPCon’s rapid route to large-scale production and expected growth over the coming years. One thing that attracted manufacturers, particularly those already operating large cell and module capacities to this technology is the similarities in processing that allow them to upgrade existing production lines and equipment rather than starting again from scratch.

These upgrades, however, did not come without challenge. New processes had to be developed and scaled, and new materials integrated. JinkoSolar has emerged as a leader in this space, and is now well underway converting all of its more than 40 GW capacity to produce TOPCon cells and modules.

And in this pv magazine Webinar we’ll hear from Mohamed Saady, Head of Technical Services and Product Management for the MENA region at JinkoSolar, about the company’s progress in making this switch – where it has already reached 26.4% average cell efficiency in manufacturing. We’ll also see, with case studies from the MENA region, how TOPCon is influencing system design and demonstrating its advantages in the field.
Also joining us for this webinar is Karl Melkonyan, senior analyst within the clean energy technology team at IHS Markit, now part of S&P Global. He will chart TOPCon’s scaleup to significant market share, and examine the possible pathways to further market dominance and possible challenges that stand in the way of this.
