Katy Merrington is cultural gardener at The Hepworth Wakefield galley garden in Yorkshire. The garden, which was designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, is a public garden which is accessible to all 24 hours a day, with intricate, layered planting schemes that offer interest through every season.

In this talk, discover how to plan and plant your garden so it shines from spring to autumn with clever combinations of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and grasses.

Katy has worked in some of the best gardens in the UK and USA including Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh at Logan, Dumfries & Galloway, Tresco Abbey Garden, Isles of Scilly and Longwood Gardens: Pennsylvania, USA. At The Hepworth Wakefield Katy has nurtured the garden from the construction phase onwards, working closely with Tom Stuart-Smith to build a flourishing oasis rich in successional colour and character.

Alys Fowler
British horticulturalist and journalist
Alys studied at the Royal Horticultural Society and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London and in 1998 was awarded a Smithsonian Scholarship to study at the New York Botanical Gardens based in the Bronx. Following her studies she went on to join the BBC Gardeners’ World presenting team, and from there her own television series, The Edible Garden, on growing your own centred around her own urban plot in Birmingham. She writes regularly for magazines, including Gardens Illustrated and has a column with The Guardian. Published books include her latest title Eat What You Grow, which draws on organic principles and a focus on biodiversity and sustainability.
