Aviation Planner, Mead & Hunt
Anita Cobb is an aviation planner with previous administrative project experience in the aviation industry. As a member of Mead & Hunt's aviation planning team, Anita is familiar with regulatory compliance, planning documentation and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. She currently focuses on airport recycling and waste management strategies and has authored several waste and management plans for airports around the country. Anita has a strong understanding of solid waste and recycling regulations; environmental management systems, and sustainability practices.

Aviation Planning and Zero Waste
The topics of waste and waste diversion are popular right now because of many environmental, financial, social, and logistical concerns. Airports are charged with the task of engaging many levels of stakeholders in their waste management plans. We will take a look at the various methods that can be used to increase stakeholder engagement and address the concerns for implementation of a successful waste diversion program. Another goal is to create a relationship between airports and their haulers that will incentivize both parties to address waste effectively. Some highlights of these strategies include communicating needs and opportunities with waste and recycling haulers, obtaining data to create a baseline for a robust program, providing education and making policies for internal staff, and evaluating infrastructure and collection tactics in order to increase participation from passengers and those responsible for collecting waste and recycling.

Environmental Compliance & Zero Waste Specialist, San Francisco International Airport
Joanne Yee is the Environmental Compliance and Zero Waste Specialist at San Francisco International Airport's Sustainability & Environmental Policy Division. She wears two hats, one of which is to manage the Airport's environmental management system to monitor SFO's environmental compliance portfolio. The other hat is implementation of materials management tasks, which include the solid waste hauling contract, Zero Waste Concessions Program, SFO Unites Against Hunger Program, and various elements of the Zero Waste Plan, in collaboration with the Airport's Environmental Operations Division.

Sustainability and Zero Waste at SFO
The SFO Airport has huge climate and sustainability goals, including their goal to attain zero: zero carbon, zero waste and zero net energy (unless it is from renewables). SFO's objective, as outlined in its 5-Year Strategic Plan, is to be the first Airport in the world to achieve triple zero. SFO has visionary leadership and a deep culture of engagement from its more than 43,000 employees. This includes the SFO Airport Commission, airline, concession, vendors and contractors. In Fiscal Year 2018, SFO served a record 57.8 million passengers. Despite being one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States, SFO successfully curtailed its emissions by 39% from a 1990 baseline, in addition to reducing per-passenger water use by 22.5% below 2013 levels and campuswide natural gas use by 10%. Continued reductions like these has led SFO to save $1.9 million annually in utility expenditures. This session will review some of these great things he airport is doing to become the most sustainable airport in the country.

Director of Sustainability, Alaska Airlines
Kirk Myers is the Director of Sustainability for Alaska Airlines and works to develop and implement sustainable business strategies that drive efficiency, innovation, and environmental benefit. His main focuses are sustainability strategy, climate change, green building, and core business practices such as energy use and zero-waste.

Making change in sustainability as an airline
To the people of Alaska Airlines, the Pacific Northwest is so much more than a destination--it's where we live, where we grew up, and where we play. Because of this, we are motivated to keep it pristine, and have chosen to take on sustainability enhancements that are important to the environment, our communities, and the advancement of the airline industry. Some of the items that will be discussed during this session include:

- Alaska Airlines serves up 37,000 cups of coffee a day on its more than 900 daily flights, brewed using more than 250,000 pounds of Starbucks coffee each year. They focus on composting or recycling as much as they can.

- Encourages guests and employees to bring their own water bottles and become active partners in the airline's goal to reduce single-use plastics.

- Powering all flights by all airlines at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with sustainable aviation biofuel.

- Emissions from planes and equipment
