Carlos Gonzalez
Associate Director, Programming and Special Initiatives, Statewide MESA
Carlos is the Associate Director, Programming and Special Initiatives for California MESA Program, and the Director of the MESA programs at the Bourns College of Engineering at UC Riverside. Carlos is a former engineer, public school educator and has been an instructor and adjunct faculty in university classrooms. His responsibilities include program management and administration, curriculum development, teacher preparation and training, and the creation and implementation of student engineering challenges.

As a MESA alumni (at both the Pre-College and University level), first generation college student and a proud Latino (from the land of eternal spring, Guatemala), he has a passion for empowering, inspiring and preparing young people and their educators for achievement and success. Carlos lives in one of the communities his local MESA program serves (Moreno Valley, CA), and has a beautiful wife and vivacious son. In his free time, Carlos enjoys hiking and being active. He also has sung and played music in the church (he still plays keyboard on occasion), produced an underground rap album and has been known to emcee events.

Ann Sanchez
2023 MSAT Keynote Speaker
I am Northern Paiute/Tohono O’odhom/Omaha/Mexican. I have been on the Mendocino coast since 2012 with my husband and two children. Graduated Sonoma State 2020 with a BA in Liberal Studies, currently finishing a multiple subject teaching credential through CalStateTEACH. I have worked with students k-12 for over 17 years. Participated in the MESA program as a student and later worked as a MESA advisor and a short time as a MESA coordinator with RISE (Resources for Indian Student Education). I am in my 3rd year teaching 1st-8th grade art, also School district Native Liaison, and also teach art for our afterschool program. I love art and it shows in everything I do. Mediums include, paint (acrylic and watercolor), beading, drawing (graphite, pen and ink), some poetry and creative writing. I enjoy working with youth of all ages. My goals are to share, create, and encourage youth and adults alike to explore their cultural identity, creativity, and build self-confidence through art and engagement.
