This sessions intent is to initiate thought and open up the question around the potential risks and opportunities associated with climate change with a follow up at the in-person event on response and mitigation to address those risk and opportunities.

The panel has been composed to provide an overview of the risks faced with Port of Newcastle at one end of the spectrum where it is the transitional risk that is most imminent to the organisation and then low-lying Pacific Island Nations where physical risk is more prominent.

    Jackie Spiteri
    Managing Director, Sustainable ESG
    Jackie is an experienced Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) professional with a history of working in the maritime and infrastructure sector bringing a wealth of knowledge on sustainable development and operations.

    With over 15 years’ experience in environment, planning and sustainability management, Jackie is now focused on strategy development and business transformation. With a gift for creating collaborative partnerships, alongside a strong ability to recognise and cultivate the potential in others, Jackie has a proven track record of accelerating organisational sustainability through strategy implementation , communication, and education. During her career Jackie has been responsible for the development of a number of Sustainability Financing Frameworks enabling over $750million of sustainability linked debt to be realised through a series of innovative sustainability financing transactions.

    In 2022, Jackie became the founder and Managing Director of boutique ESG advisory company Sustainable ESG (SESG). SESG are focused on supporting organisations navigate the evolving ESG imperative. Helping organisations to understand their current state and develop relevant and tailored strategies that build upon existing foundations.

    Jackie sits on the Board for PIANC ANZ, a global not-for-profit body that brings together experts on technical, economic, environmental and planning issues pertaining to waterborne transport and infrastructure and is a former Chair of the Ports Australia Environment Planning and Sustainability Working Group. Jackie also sits on the Mayor of Newcastle’s Sustainable Development Collaborative, an active group focused on localising the United Nations SDGs to the region.

    Jackie was responsible for introducing EcoPort to the Oceania region and since 2018 Jackie has advocated for ports to participate in the program with nine ports now part of the network. In her capacity as Managing Director of SESG, Jackie has recently signed an MOU and Statement of Intent with EcoPorts EcoSLC to formally collaborate and further extend the network of participating Ports and Terminals in Oceania.

    Nick Livesey
    Chief Financial Officer, Port of Newcastle
    Nick is Chief Financial Officer at Port of Newcastle, with responsibility for the organisation’s financial strategy, implementation, governance and ESG.

    Nick joined the Port in May 2019 having most recently spent 12 years at Sydney Airport, which is Australia’s largest and busiest airport. Nick performed a range of senior financial management roles, including four years as Head of Finance.

    With extensive experience in the infrastructure and property sectors, Nick has a track record of identifying trends and business levers to maximise asset utilisation and returns. He was previously a Senior Manager at global consultancy firm Ernst & Young and has a reputation as a strategic business partner adept at navigating a complex business environment where there are competing priorities.

    Nick holds a BA (Hons) Economics (Industrial) from University of Leeds and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

    Dr Ron Cox
    Honorary Associate Professor Civil and Environmental Engineering , Convenor Australian Climate Change Adaptation Research Network for Settlements and Infrastructure ACCARNSI
    Ron Cox is a longstanding PIANC A&NZ Board Member - who has also concurrently represented PIANC on Engineers Australia National Committee on Coastal and Ocean Engineering (NCCOE)
    Ron has generously brought his more than 40 years of professional, academic and organisational experience in coastal, ocean, environmental engineering and climate change adaptation to his work as a PIANC A&NZ Board member, as a member of PIANC’s Permanent Task Group of Climate Change (PTGCC), the Environmental Commission (EnviCom) and of Co-Com – PIANC’s International Co-operation Commission. He has been and is a very active supporter/organiser of PIANC A&NZ conferences and workshops, and an effective liaison person between PIANC and other professional organisations and institutions.

    Matthew Stephenson
    Senior Manager Investor Relations and ESG, Port of Newcastle
    Matthew Stephenson has worked in Sustainability for over 12 years, after completing a Master’s degree in Sustainability at the University of Leeds. Matthew started his career at an award-winning sustainability charity in London, looking at how large organisations can help drive sustainable change through their supply chains, helping them create and deliver ESG initiatives in a meaningful way as well as providing resources and guidance to SMEs helping them improve their environmental performance. Later focusing on sustainability in the built environment and most recently building ESD, helping design and certify some of Australia’s biggest institutional buildings against ISCA, LEED, Green Star and NABERS ratings. Matthew has continued his professional development, gaining certification status under numerous ESD ratings assessments, and undertaking further studies with the University of Cambridge around transitioning to a net zero economy.

    Adrian Sammons
    Founder and Managing Director, AMSTEC
    Adrian has over 30 years’ experience in shipping, ports, and transport industries and in 2005 established a transport economics consultancy; AMSTEC Pty Ltd, which has completed many transport related projects worldwide. Maritime development in ports and shipping have been a significant speciality of Adrian’s career and has successfully completed over 50 projects, many in the Asia-Pacific region. These have included Port Master-planning, demand forecasting, mapping supply/value chains and port-hinterland connectivity, institutional management reform, port productivity, stevedore concessions, port infrastructure design, international and coastal shipping development and river/inland waterway ferry service start-ups and yacht marina design, green-port development, decarbonisation of shipping, and port operational sustainability.

    Dr Scott Kelly
    Chief Economic Advisor, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment New Zealand
    Scott Kelly is an experienced researcher who is committed to working with stakeholders to create change towards a more sustainable future. He has spent the last 15 years working alongside organisations on the development of analytical tools, frameworks and scenarios to help understand impacts, mitigate risks and develop strategies to improve business outcomes. Combining his strengths in both quantitative and qualitative approaches, Scott has worked closely with public, private and not-for-profit organisations across Europe, Australia and New Zealand to create change for a better world. Working directly with some of the world’s largest organisations Scott has had the opportunity to use and apply real-world data to solve complex problems and to see these solutions put into action. Scott was the recipient of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship in 2008 and read towards an MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge in the UK. After completing his PhD he was elected as a Junior Research Fellow of Darwin College and was appointed as the senior risk researcher at the Centre for Risk Studies at the Judge Business School. He is now a research director at the Institute for Sustainable Futures leading research in the fields of finance, economics and policy.
