A summary of current data on substance misuse in pregnancy and impact on maternal and neonatal outcomes. This will be followed by two real life examples of complex substance misuse in pregnancy exploring pre-pregnancy, antenatal and postnatal care and the impact substance misuse has on the mother, pregnancy and unborn baby. The will also include discussion around the role of the multidisciplinary team and common challenges.

    Ms Samantha Steele
    Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, West Middlesex University Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

    Samantha is a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at West Middlesex Hospital, Twickenham with higher training in maternal medicine and high-risk obstetrics. At West Middlesex Hospital the obstetric medicine service provides an obstetric link for women with substance and alcohol misuse and complex perinatal mental health needs in pregnancy in conjunction with specialist safeguarding, psychiatry and midwifery teams.

    She is a published author on maternal medicine and maternity safety topics including a 2020 review of substance misuse in pregnancy for the journal Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine in addition to being a peer reviewer for the journal Obstetric Medicine. Samantha completed her medical degree at Imperial College, London and has 16 years’ experience working in obstetrics and gynaecology across London.
