This workshop will look at what Crowcombe & Stogumber Primary Schools consider to be “wellbeing”, how to achieve good mental health for children, but also how this can be done through both meaningful relationships in school and key changes to curriculum, culture and ethos. Children who are happy and driven are less likely to suffer poor mental health. Julie Norman will look at ideas to help nurture pupils’ purpose in school, including things such as self-care, belonging, lifestyle, relationships with the school community and the curriculum.

Nurturing a child’s wellbeing, mental health and healthy relationships comes from small but vital behaviours in school and Julie will offer lots of ideas, including what they did at her schools and the crucial role of curriculum, ethos and culture.

Julie Norman has been in education for over 20 years working from early years up to key stage 3. She began teaching the ‘unteachables’ and found that they are very easy to teach when the environment is right. Julie later became an executive headteacher in Somerset looking at ways to cut teacher workload and embed a character curriculum allowing learning to be pupil-led. SOS was born to support thousands of headteachers to do the same. Julie now works with a growing MAT embedding the principles of excellence.
