About
As battery technologies continue to evolve to deliver higher energy density, faster charging performance, and extended service life, understanding material-level safety has become increasingly important. Thermal instability within battery materials and components can trigger unwanted reactions that ultimately lead to thermal runaway, creating significant risks throughout the battery lifecycle.

In this webinar, experts from Waters Materials Sciences (formerly TA Instruments) will demonstrate how advanced thermal analysis techniques, including Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA), provide critical insights into the thermal behaviour and safety of battery materials and components.

Through practical examples and real-world case studies, attendees will learn how thermal analysis can be used to:

• Evaluate the thermal stability of cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and complete cells.
• Identify the onset of exothermic reactions associated with thermal runaway.
• Quantify heat generation and decomposition processes.
• Assess how state-of-charge impacts battery safety.
• Characterize air- and moisture-sensitive battery materials.
• Investigate separator dimensional stability using TMA to understand shrinkage and deformation risks at elevated temperatures.
• Analyse complete coin cells using the latest DSC technologies to generate safety-relevant data under realistic conditions.

Attendees will gain actionable insights into how thermal characterization can accelerate battery development, improve material selection, and help identify potential safety concerns before they become costly failures.
