Join us, in association with The Engineer, as we take you through what it’s like to be an engineer at BAE Systems in 2024. We are looking to employ a large range of engineers, across disciplines and levels, with a particular focus on the following areas:

This is a long-term commitment involving significant investments in skills. We also work closely with local partners to support economic development through the transfer of knowledge, skills and technology.

We will be showcasing some of the different areas of the business and highlighting parts of the product life cycle you can get involved in. We’ll answer the question ‘what it is like to be an Engineer at BAE Systems?’ and provide an insight into the recruitment process. Then we open the floor for you to get your questions answered, by our expert panel.

Stuart Justice
Naval Ships Engineering Director
Stuart began his career in Glasgow in 1998 as a Combat Systems Engineer working on the Brunei OPV Project for Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd. Following various roles on the Brunei OPV Project, Stuart then joined the Type 45 Destroyer Project.
Stuart was initially the Type 45 Combat System Design Manager, and latterly the Type 45 Combat System Integration Manager, successfully delivering the first three Type 45 Destroyers.
Stuart joined the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) in January 2012 and was promoted to the ACA Technical Authority in April 2015. Stuart helped successfully deliver the first two QEC Aircraft Carriers. In May 2019, Stuart returned to Naval Ships in Glasgow as the Engineering Director.
Stuart is married with two children. He enjoys cycling, travelling and Formula One

Robbie Lyons
Talent Acquisition & Critical Skills Manager
Robbie has been with BAE Systems for 7yrs, developing and implementing x3 apprenticeship programmes and managing the UK high-potential graduate programme before moving into the Total Talent team in Head Office to focus on Talent Acquisition across the UK Enterprise. Prior to this, he spent 8yrs in various recruitment and talent roles, including as a supplier to BAE Systems, following the completion of his English & Creative Writing with Media Degree.

Robbie’s area of expertise for the session will be Attraction and Acquisition of Talent into the business, and onward management and development of talent once in situ.

Rachael Carr
Air Product Technical Manager/Assistant Chief Engineer
Rachael's career started almost 16 years ago when she joined the technical apprenticeship scheme at 18, straight from college. Rachael was previously a System Integration Engineer, working on Tempest with Vehicle Systems Integration at Warton, before starting a new role as Air Product Technical Manager/Assistant Chief Engineer, still working within Tempest.

One of Rachael's proudest achievement has been working on Typhoon for a few years and having the opportunity to provide holiday relief cover in Taif, Saudi Arabia.

Rachael likes to give back and support our junior engineers through their careers where she can. She is a STEM ambassador and volunteer for anything with STEM, women or early career starters. Rachael encourage those at careers fairs to research and see that engineering is far more varying than they maybe perceive or know.

Charlotte French
Submarines Senior Engineering Manager - Engineering Function
Charlotte works within the central Engineering Function, responsible for the capability management of all the Specialist Engineering teams to ensure they have everything they need to support our Programmes both now and in the future. Charlotte is also responsible for Strategic Workforce Planning and Resource Governance across Submarines Engineering.
Charlotte has worked at BAE Systems Submarines all of her career since joining the Graduate Programme 13 years ago. Charlotte spent the first part of her career as a Mechanical Engineer designing systems for the Dreadnought Class, before moving into the Specialist Engineering area. Outside of work, Charlotte does try to get outdoors with her family, and living on the edge of Lake District, they are very fortunate to have such beautiful countryside to explore.
