Sexual violence prevention programming on college campuses often focuses on bystander intervention strategies by providing students with skills to become active bystanders. This approach views all members of a campus community as potential interventionists, challenging damaging social norms and working to prevent harmful situations. However, it can overlook a student’s multifaceted identity, including their gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship, and class. Student’s identities’ either as a member of a marginalized or privileged group affects their ability to intervene in situations of bias, discrimination, potential violence, and acts of violence. This workshop will explore how participants can include the practical ways to integrate intersectional root causes of interpersonal violence in active bystander trainings, as well as discuss what could make it more or less challenging for someone to “stand up”.
