Over time, approaches and strategies taken by campus leaders to prevent gender violence and all forms of harm and abuse can involve many different groups, incorporate multiple initiatives and present countless challenges and setbacks. The only thing that's certain for those who commit to making a positive change or shift in campus culture, is that once you start, there's no turning back. Meaningful and sustainable practices and routines are critically important to momentum and capacity building. This presentation will share strategies, approaches, and lessons learned from the University of Northern Iowa's 20 year "prevention story." Facilitators will discuss monthly and annual efforts that help to systemically embed and adopt a spectrum of prevention framework in order to practice and institutionalize gender violence prevention programming and initiatives among students, staff and its broader community. Alan Heisterkamp, PhD
Dr. Heisterkamp serves as director of the Center for Violence Prevention and the MVP Leadership Institute at UNI. Prior to assist in launching the CVP, Alan served as a consultant with the Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention from 2007-2011 and as the principal investigator on a four-year case study entitled The Sioux City Project. He was the education consultant on the award-winning film documentary, BULLY. He also co-facilitated research on the Coaching Boys Into Men program in 2007 and continues to instruct school and community leaders in gender violence prevention and the bystander approach using the Mentors in Violence Prevention Model (MVP). Dr. Heisterkamp served as a public school administrator, school counselor, teacher and athletic coach for 23 years.

Michael Flemming, PhD
Dr. Fleming is an associate professor of family studies at the University of Northern Iowa. His scholarship and teaching focuses on the dynamics associated with interpersonal violence; models of prevention and early intervention in secondary and higher education schools; and education and training of domestic/sexual assault educators and advocates. His community engagement includes serving on boards for domestic/sexual agencies; serving on regional and statewide task forces and coalitions focusing on domestic/sexual assault, as well as working with non-profits providing program and evaluation consultation.
