PIPA - Discretionary Exceptions to Disclosure

This session will provide a review of discretionary exceptions to disclosure, including, legal advice exceptions to disclosure; confidential commercial information; and information collected for an investigation.

This is a hands-on session. Attendees will learn:

• What factors should be considered when deciding to release certain information;
• Whether records can be redacted on the basis that information contained within is not the personal information of the applicant; and
• Practical ways of handling certain types of records, including document drafts and communications containing legal advice.

Attendees will participate in mock redaction exercises so that they can practice applying the knowledge imparted in this session.
