Greencap and McMahon Services often work together on identification, assessment, and remediation of asbestos in soil works. Then, collaborating further on implementing the strategy and reporting on outcomes. 

This webinar will look at the background of asbestos in soil contamination, the regulatory framework around asbestos in soil assessments, and will describe the role that consultants play in assessing the significance of any issues the need to be remediated or managed.

McMahon Services will provide the perspective of a remediation contractor and will present some of the challenges and successes associated with the remediation of asbestos contaminated sites.

The webinar will conclude with a Q&A with experts on asbestos investigation, risk assessment, and remediation from around Australia.

Andrew Durand
Principal Environment Engineer - Greencap
Andrew is an Environmental Engineer with over 18 years’ experience in environmental consultancy, with a focus on environmental assessment, remediation and management of contaminated sites. Andrew provides technical guidance and project management assistance for projects in South Australia and nationally.

He has had direct involvement in project managing, planning, conducting field investigations (including remediation) and reporting for hundreds of sites in South Australia. These have been for a range of purposes including due diligence, assessment orders and potential re-development. Andrew also has significant experience in the assessment and management of asbestos impacted soils and is well versed in recent guidance on this subject.

Anthony Woods
Construction Manager - McMahon Services
Anthony started at McMahon Services in 2013 and served as Construction Manager within the Asbestos and Hazardous Materials Division after running his own civil business for 15 years, bringing with him extensive experience in civil operations, asbestos remediation, data and communications service infrastructure.

His experience has broadened to include all aspects of asbestos removal and abatement works inclusive of contaminated soil remediation across Australia and New Zealand for projects valued up to $8 million.

Since 2018, Anthony established Company operations in New Zealand establishing our Auckland office and leading construction management and business development activities across the country.

Currently Anthony is applying his industry knowledge to oversee the remediation of 27,000 tonnes of reconstituted demolition waste contaminated with asbestos spread across 147 separate locations.

Matthew Barberson
Team Manager - Contaminated Land Management
Mathew has over 10 years of experience delivering a diverse range of contaminated land projects focusing on landfills, petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, PFAS, nutrients, acid sulphate soils, and asbestos.

Throughout his career, Matthew has been involved in leadership roles, project management, and stakeholder management with primary focus on coordinating remediation projects at sensitive land use sites.

Jean Meaklim
Senior Principal - Risk Assessment (Health & Environment)
With 30 years’ experience in chemistry, environmental and human health toxicology, risk assessment, environmental auditing, and environmental and public health policy, Jean is a technical specialist in the assessment and management of risks from contaminated land, contaminated water, industrial wastes, industry and agriculture.

Jean has expertise in assessing risks from emerging contaminants such as PFAS and particulate pollution as well as more traditional environmental contaminants (e.g. heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, asbestos). Her chemistry and toxicology skills, plus extensive public health and research background, enables targeted identification and assessment of relevant information for emerging and established contaminants in soil, water and air.

Jean was also part of the EPA/DELWP Contaminated Land Stakeholder Working Group – Subordinate Legislation Reform Program for the development of new Victorian environmental regulations.
