Dean has always been technical. At first, he studied aircraft mechanics and worked in the aerospace industry for several years. In the 1990s, he got involved in manufacturing, working in the service group of a machine tool builder. Initially, he used his mechanical/electrical skills to repair CNC machines. Later, he moved into training, applications and sales while also earning a bachelor's degree in international business.

Dean worked for 13 years for machine tool builders in various positions, including service, applications, technical center manager and sales management. Before joining Mate in 2020, Dean worked for a major workholding manufacturer selling custom workholding directly to end users and through distribution.
