Historically, machine shops relied heavily on manual toolholding techniques, which often required significant skill and time investment. However, in recent years, the industry has seen a shift toward high-performance toolholding technologies. These innovations enable greater precision, repeatability and efficiency in machining processes. This transition has already improved production speed and quality for many shops and research is working toward digitization of tools and tool management. The future of artificial intelligence (AI) and the impact on tool management can optimize tool selection, toolpath generation and can even predict maintenance needs — thereby reducing downtime and extending tool life. By embracing these innovations, shops can position themselves for long-term success and remain at the forefront of the ever-evolving manufacturing sector.
