Other topics will include discrimination concerns associated with the return to work and practical considerations such as Social Distancing Policies in the workplace, health and welfare concerns of employers and employees, and the potential for employer liability associated with decision making and related return to work policies.

Matthew J. Connell

Mr. Connell graduated from the Widener University School of Law in 1997 where he served on the Moot Court Honor Society. Upon graduation from law school Mr. Connell was appointed as an Assistant District Attorney in Chester County, Pennsylvania where he served from 1997 until 2000. Mr. Connell represents employers in employment matters including defense of claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1963, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. Mr. Connell also counsels employers in labor and employment matters and routinely provides training to supervisors and employees on all aspects of discrimination and harassment in the work place. Since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, Mr. Connell has been guiding employers through the myriad of concerns associated with the FFCRA, CARES Act, furloughs and layoffs.

As a founding partner of MacMain, Connell & Leinhauser, during his career Mr. Connell has developed extensive litigation skills defending private and public sector clients, including police and correctional officers, government officials and municipalities having tried several cases to verdict in state and federal courts. He routinely handles all phases of appellate advocacy having extensively briefed and argued cases in the Appellate Courts of Pennsylvania and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mr. Connell’s practice also includes the representation of clients in various administrative proceedings having successfully defended employment matters in front of the Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission, the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Mr. Connell lectures on discrimination and harassment in the workplace, the impact of medical marijuana in the workplace, civil rights litigation, and legal issues facing correctional officials and codes officials. Mr. Connell has also served on an advisory board for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce, Labor and Employment Subcommittee on the impact of medical marijuana in the workplace.

CAREER

Mr. Connell was born and raised as the seventh of eight children in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation from high school he worked his way through college as a house painter, factory laborer, roofer and salesclerk. Upon admission to Law School, Mr. Connell obtained a prestigious clerkship with Judge Eugene Edw. J. Maier of the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas before beginning his career as a prosecutor in the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office and then Chester County District Attorney’s Office. Mr. Connell then transitioned into private practice and has been representing private and public sector clients since 2000.

BIO

Laurie is a 1992 graduate of William Paterson College in Wayne, New Jersey with a B.A. in History. She worked second shift at Six Flags to pay for school and was a recipient of the Christa McAuliff academic scholarship. Laurie attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and obtained her juris doctorate in 1997. While there, Laurie was a member of the Women’s Law Group.

CAREER

During law school, Laurie interned for the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, where she screened incoming complaints, and made disposition recommendations. She also interned for the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, where she handled preliminary hearings at the District Court. During her third year in law school, Laurie worked for an insurance defense litigation firm.

Following graduation, Laurie began her career at a Pittsburgh-based class action litigation firm, developing her skills in state and federal court litigation in nationwide, complex class actions involving banking, ERISA, insurance, consumer lending, unfair trade and consumer protection. After returning home to the Philadelphia area, Laurie practiced as a litigator honing her skills in defense of insurance claims, unfair insurance practices, consumer protection, real estate matters, fiduciary questions and contract disputes.

Laurie has spent over a decade dedicating her skills to the Rare Disease, Disability and Ichthyosis communities. She has helped numerous families and individuals with accessing resources, accommodations, services and medically necessary supplies.

Laurie joined MacMain, Connell & Leinhauser in October 2018.
