BioCentriq is a Contract Development Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) offering process development, tech transfer and clinical manufacturing services for both cell and gene therapy. In addition, BioCentriq offers both standard, open enrollment, workforce development programs for aspiring professionals as well as custom workforce development programs.

Dr. Hartounian earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware. He leads the Biopharma Division at NJII, working with colleagues in industry and academia to help biopharmaceutical companies transform discovery into commercial production. He has 30 years of experience in the biotechnology industry working for companies such as DuPont, Monsanto, SkyePharma and Vyteris. He also founded the companies MicroIslet, Protagenic Therapeutics, and DiaVacs and has worked in a variety of product lines — including cell therapy, oncology, women’s health, pain management and drug delivery. In addition, Dr. Hartounian is an adjunct associate professor of Chemical Engineering at Columbia University, and is on the Affiliated Faculty in NJIT’s Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science.

Director, Process Development
Dr. Santiago-Ortiz obtained his PhD in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from University of California, Berkeley with a minor in Cell Biology. During his career, Dr. Santiago-Ortiz has held multiple industry experiences over a span of 8+ years including directed evolution of adeno-associated virus (AAV) capsid proteins, engineering of structural and enzymatic proteins of HIV1-based Lentiviral vectors, library cloning, delivery of CRISPR-Cas9 transposon-based mutagenesis, randomized codon insertional mutagenesis, and design & cloning of vectors.

Head of Cell Therapy
Alex Klarer has a background in Chemical Engineering focused on bioprocessing and process engineering. He has held roles at Genentech and Hitachi where he led the translational process development for a range of cell therapies and ex-vivo gene therapies including T-cell immunotherapies, stem cell therapies, and MSC mediated immunoregulation. Alex also has experience developing novel technologies and applications to address gaps in manufacturing capabilities. He looks forward to continuing to partner with groundbreaking regenerative medicine companies and helping their therapies reach patients.

Karen is an accomplished HR Leader with 20 years of progressively responsible leadership experience and an impressive record of starting up operations, reducing costs, implementing organizational solutions, and applying overall human resources expertise. She holds a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology with an emphasis in Human Resources Management. She joined NJII in 2017 and prior to that spent 5 years as Director of Human Resources at NBC Universal.
