As SMART Reading kicks off 35 years of sparking joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book, we invite our volunteer community to join us for a Town Hall webinar.
During this 1-hour session, volunteers will get an up close look at SMART’s impact during the 2025-26 school year, including what it means for the organization to have given away its 5 millionth book!

Additionally, Executive Director Jessica Bowersox and Program Director Rashelle Chase-Miller will provide an in-depth walk through of programmatic shifts the organization is making to reduce costs while maintaining robust, mission-aligned programs amidst a challenging fundraising environment for nonprofits. They’ll also give an overview of ways to be involved in the 2026-27 school year, and answer questions.

    Jessica Bowersox
    Executive Director
    Jessica became SMART Reading’s Executive Director in July 2022. She has been with the organization since 2010, as the Communications Director and later the Deputy Director. In her tenure at SMART, she has played an integral role in setting the strategic vision and working with staff and board leadership to fulfill that vision. She also has 17 years’ experience in public relations and marketing within communications agencies and the nonprofit sector. Jessica has Bachelor’s degrees in Public Relations and Magazine Journalism from the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, and a Master’s in Business Administration from Willamette University.

    Rashelle Chase-Miller
    Program Director
    Since becoming SMART’s Program Director in 2022, Rashelle has guided post-pandemic program recovery, shaped strategic vision, and expanded Book Bank programming statewide. Her 25-year career in early education encompasses roles as a teacher, center director, and curriculum manager. She earned degrees in Political Studies and Black Studies from Pitzer College and an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Portland State University.
