The disposal of unfit shredded banknotes is one of the most visible environmental activities of a central bank issue department or a printing works.

A recent survey showed that 42% of central banks send their waste to landfill but that 40% of central banks surveyed wanted to explore different ways of disposal from how they do it today. This Forum event will have real life examples from the USA and Pakistan about how they dispose of their waste alongside a review of the Reconnaissance white paper, ‘What Goes Round, Comes Round’, which investigated the science of waste disposal, what central banks do today and where to start if you want to do something different. G+D will report on its work to create less waste and how to manage it.

Forums are more interactive events than other formats and the audience are asked to actively engage with the speakers.

This is the start of a series of Cash & Payments Sustainability Forum online events, the first three of which focus on end-of-life solutions for banknotes. The second will take place on 26 April exploring innovative new alternative approaches for cotton waste and the third will be on the disposal of polymer waste in May.

Robert Bujas
Assistant VP, Supply Chain Engagement – FedCash® Services
Robert is the Assistant Vice President over the Federal Reserve Financial Service’s FedCash® Services Supply Chain Engagement group where he currently serves as the program manager for Cash Visibility, which is a multi-year collaborative initiative with the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB) and the cash services industry to develop standard electronic data exchanges between the FRB and cash industry partners. In addition, he chairs the Social Responsibility Council, focusing on sustainability.

Robert’s FRB experience spans over 20 years where he has held positions of increasing responsibility. He has served as the product manager over the FedCash applications and spent a portion of his Fed career in FRB Cash Services where he managed Cash Operations and has led several of the Federal Reserve Bank’s Twelfth District programs.

Robert holds a Bachelor of Science, in Computer Information Systems from the University of Phoenix.

Alexandra Peppmeier
Sustainability Engineer – G+D
Alexandra Peppmeier works as Sustainability Engineer at Giesecke+Devrient Currency Technology GmbH. In her role, she is responsible for G+D`s way forward to more sustainable products and processes, both internally and for the cash cycle. She supports G+D`s paper mills as well as G+D`s printing works on their way to reduce carbon emissions, waste and water consumption.
Alexandra holds a master`s degree in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.

Engr. Syed Faizan, PMP
Deputy Manager - Pakistan Security Printing Corporation
Meet Faizan, a passionate and certified sustainability project manager, forest creator, and researcher with over four years of experience in the corporate world. With a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, he strongly believes that he was born to make a difference and is dedicated to finding solutions to environmental problems.

Currently serving as the Deputy Manager at Pakistan Security Printing Corporation, Faizan has led over 5 sustainability projects with diverse teams. Notably, he has spearheaded a pioneering research project on waste paper composting, which resulted in the successful conversion of waste banknote paper into high-quality organic compost. Faizan has also achieved remarkable success in developing two urban forests using the innovative Miyawaki Technique, resulting in denser forests unlike traditional ones. These forests are projected to absorb 700-800 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide annually when fully grown, contributing to a greener environment.
