Why is i^2 = -1? Most approaches for providing kids with an answer for this haven't satisfied me, so I set out to redesign my Complex Numbers unit. After testing it out with two classes, some flaws became evident, but I also had some real successes. In this session I'd like to share with you why I find most approaches to Complex Numbers unsatisfying, what I tried, how it failed, and I'll spend a lot of the session asking you for ideas on how to improve this unit.
