The year 2020 delivered new health and safety concerns regarding the spread of infectious disease. These concerns have prompted a call to action that the design community can answer. This presentation will provide an overview of existing lighting technology and how it can help reduce the spread of infectious disease by minimizing touch in shared spaces, support wayfinding and modified circulation patterns, and reduce stress through visual distraction and color temperature adjustments. The presentation will also delve into ultraviolet light, specifically UV-C, a non-visible wavelength of light (radiant energy) effective in killing bacteria and viruses including coronaviruses.

  • Attendees will learn how different lighting control technologies can support touchless environments, physical distancing in shared spaces, and provide cost savings to owners by reducing use.
  • Attendees will learn different lighting design approaches to support wayfinding and modified circulation patterns.
  • Attendees will learn how the color temperature of light can positively impact human wellbeing and research supported approaches to stress reduction.

Principal, The Lighting Practice
Michael Barber is a principal with The Lighting Practice. He has over 25 years of experience in the lighting profession designing for academic, corporate, healthcare, mixed-use and retail environments. Michael acts as both The Lighting Practice’s sustainable design and human-centric design coordinator, working with the staff to maximize their design vision while minimizing the impact to the environment and supporting human health. His professional activities include participation on the IALD’s Energy and Sustainability committee. He has taught the lighting fundamentals course at Drexel University for 12 years and has lectured in the Master of Science in Sustainable Design program at Philadelphia University on Electric light and daylighting design principles.

He has over 10 years of experience designing lighting solutions for corporate, exhibit and museum, government, retail, exterior site, and building façades as well as daylighting design integration and master planning. Tom’s career in lighting design has afforded him the opportunity to work on a wide variety of project types throughout North America, Middle East, and Asia. In 2019, as part of the 40under40 awards, he was recognized by Lighting Magazine for his leadership in lighting design. Tom is also an adjunct assistant professor at Pratt Institute in New York, teaching Light Color and Material as part of their Interior Design program.
