In celebration of the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, the Alice Paul Institute is honored to host a spellbinding viewing of a performance based upon Alice Paul’s lifelong dedication to the fight for gender equality. Join us as we watch “Alice Paul and the 20th Century Fight for Women's Equality: A Living History Performance,” a 40-minute film created by the mother-daughter creative team of Liz Cannon and Joanna Guy. Researched, written, and acted by this talented duo, the film showcases dynamic monologues to tell the story of Alice Paul’s wide-ranging contributions to the women’s suffrage and equal rights movements.

Joanna Guy’s vibrant performance as a young Alice Paul recounting, in 1920, the bold campaign she led for women’s suffrage is enriched by Liz Cannon’s embodiment of an older Alice Paul sharing her thoughts on the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972. Cannon also brings to the forefront Alice Paul’s lesser known work to incorporate gender equality into the Civil Rights Act and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Throughout the performance, extensive quotes from Paul are woven, resulting in a factual and emotionally charged narrative that is, at turns, humorous, dramatic, and affecting.

Guy and Cannon will join us for a live Q&A immediately following the film and look forward to sharing more about their creative process.
