Net Zero UX: Decarbonize Your Designs and Discover Your Digital Superpowers
As designers in today’s world, we have an innate desire to search for purpose in what we do, discover ways to create designs that actually matter, and to find deeper meaning through our work.
Designing with a purpose is a difficult pursuit. We can often feel we aren’t making a difference with our designs while earning a living. However, there is a secret to unlocking this ability and discovering your inner powers for social change.
Roger will highlight his journey over the last 20+ years in designing for good and how that has led him to uncover the secret and hopefully inspire you with this simple truth. You will also hear how BP is using design to lower the carbon footprint and reimagining energy through digital innovation in what he calls Net Zero UX.

Why Human Centered Design is Not Enough
The “coming of age” of design thinking, as described by Harvard Business Review in an 2015 issue entirely dedicated to the practice, heralded a new era for designers, recognizing their value and in the process elevating their status in strategic decisions.
Designers have always been at the forefront of solving problems. But under the influence brought about by the profession’s rise to fame, designers also have more responsibility.
We argue that Human Centered Design, in its wide application, has become outdated. It’s missing the big picture, and our take is that it’s the responsibility of designers to change that.
Expanded to what we call Planetary Conscious Design, we take you through our version of Social Design using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a lens to guide designers into the future.

Embrace Complexity – Systemic Design for Social- and Ecological Innovation
We live in a digitalized society, which is facing major challenges characterized by increasing complexity, uncertainty, and constant change. Human-Centered Design as an approach plays a decisive role in shaping this change today. But when it comes to complex social- and ecological issues, an approach that is only focussing on the needs of humans falls short to create sustainable innovation. The emerging field of Systemic Design aims to address complex systemic challenges with a design mindset by integrating Systems Thinking and Human-Centered Design. Based on one year of research and practical experiences, this talk will give you an overview of emerging Systemic Design mindsets and methods, and inspiration on how to apply a systems perspective to your innovation projects.
