About This Webinar

High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) has emerged as a powerful approach for comprehensive drug testing in clinical toxicology, allowing detection and identification of drugs and toxicants without requiring a priori selection of specific targets. Over the past decade, advances in HRMS-based testing have focused on optimizing acquisition strategies, establishing objective criteria for compound identification, and improving spectral library matching and data analysis. These efforts have provided a foundation for clinically validated testing that can be continually expanded as new drugs and toxicants emerge. More recent work has aimed to improve sensitivity while maintaining selectivity through advances in instrumentation and to apply HRMS to detect emerging substances and characterize changes in the unregulated drug supply. This presentation will review lessons learned from the development and clinical implementation of HRMS and highlight how comprehensive testing can extend beyond individual patient care to support near-real-time surveillance of a rapidly changing drug supply.

The webinar will address the evolution, capabilities, limitations, and expanding clinical and public health applications of HRMS in toxicology.

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Describe the development and clinical implementation of HRMS-based comprehensive drug testing and the analytical criteria used for confident compound identification.
• Compare information-dependent and data-independent HRMS acquisition strategies and discuss their effects on sensitivity, selectivity, and detection of toxicological agents.
• Explain how comprehensive HRMS testing can be expanded to detect emerging substances and how clinical toxicology data can be leveraged for drug surveillance.

Kara L. Lynch, PhD, is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She serves as Co-Director of the Core Clinical Laboratory at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, overseeing Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology, and is Director of Chemistry at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. Her research focuses on clinical chemistry and toxicology, with expertise in the use of mass spectrometry to identify and quantify endogenous and exogenous compounds in biological specimens. Her laboratory develops and applies technologies including LC-MS/MS and LC-QTOF mass spectrometry, with the goal of translating laboratory findings into clinically useful approaches for disease diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.
