In this webinar, Professor Dacre will discuss the importance of continuous medical education training and assessment.

She will also explore the effects of gender and ethnicity on the career trajectories and performance of female and BAME doctors.

Prof Iqbal Singh

Consultant Physician & Chair, Centre of Excellence in Safety for Older People

Professor Singh is a consultant physician and Chair of the Centre of Excellence in Safety for Older People (CESOP) and has led on training and education of the workforce within the health and social care sector on issues around improving skills and knowledge and equally focusing on embedding a culture of compassion, dignity and respect.

He has been a leading contributor to healthcare and medical regulation and as commissioner Health Care Commission and Chair of the Expert Reference Group on Patient Safety with national and international experts, he led the development of criteria indicators for assessment of safety in healthcare. He is also chair of the GMC BME Doctors’ Forum and chaired the GMC’s Equality and Diversity Committee from 2008 – 2012 and founded Diversity Partners. He is a member of the National Platinum Awards Committee and medical vice chair of the Advisory Committee for Clinical Excellence Awards (ACCEA) North West and led the way for stakeholder engagement.

He is Founder Chair of the Centre for Remediation, Support and Training (CRST), focusing on induction, support mentorship and remediation - helping international graduates successfully integrate into NHS and communities, developing resilience and addressing their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

He is a member of the Health Honours Committee which advises on nominations for honours in the New Year and Birthday Honours lists and member of the Diversity Inclusion Committee providing oversight on embedding diversity in the Honours system.

Sanjay Arya

Consultant Cardiologist & Medical Director, Chair, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Arya is a Consultant Cardiologist providing comprehensive cardiac service.

His areas of interest are coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, syncope and cardiac
assessment for non-cardiac surgery and Professional footballers. He provides high quality evidence based medicine.

He is the Medical Director of Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. He plays a critical role in the performance of the organisation, providing leadership to the medical workforce, focussing on delivery of clinically safe and financially sustainable high quality services within the framework of robust clinical governance.

Dr Arya is also founder member, senior faculty advisor and board member of the Centre of Excellence in Safety for Older People and the Centre for Remediation, Support and Training.

Jane Dacre

Honorary Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist, Whittington Hospital & Director, UCL Medical School

Professor Dame Jane Dacre is an honorary consultant physician and rheumatologist at the Whittington Hospital in north London, and director of UCL Medical School in London, and immediate past-president of the RCP.

She has also been the medical director of MRCP(UK), a GMC council member and chaired the GMC Education and Training Committee (2008–2012) and clinical lead for the development of the first Clinical Skills Centre in the UK, as well as co-author of the GALS screen. She has been instrumental in the development, implementation and evaluation of assessment systems in medicine.

In 2012 she won the medicine and healthcare category for the Women in the City: Woman of Achievement Award, and in 2013 she was named in the Health Service Journal’s inaugural list of 50 inspirational women in healthcare.

Bill McCarthy

Regional Director, NHS England

Bill is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations) and Honorary Professor of Health Policy at the University of Bradford and Chair of Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
In a previous role he was the Government’s principal policy adviser on health reforms and has served on various national bodies including the NHS Constitution Forum and the Health and Local Government Strategy Board.
An economist by profession, he has held a number of senior public service appointments including Director-General at the Department of Health, Chief Executive at City of York Council, Chief Executive of NHS Yorkshire and the Humber and, most recently, National Policy Director at NHS England. Bill was appointed a Non-Executive Director at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust on 1 November, 2015, and Chair on 1 November, 2016.

Silas Nicholls

Chief Executive, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust

Silas is an experienced Chief Executive and NHS leader who began his NHS career as a graduate management trainee. He has since held a wide range of general management posts, including commissioning roles in health authorities, management of community services and extensive hospital management experience.

Silas’s first Chief Executive post was at University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM) in 2016, having joined the organisation two years earlier as Chief Operating Officer. More recently he has been Chief Executive of Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals NHS Trust until joining Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, on 28th October 2019 as Chief Executive. Throughout the Covid-10 Pandemic Silas has chaired the daily GM Gold Command.
