Severe and sinister hand infections present as a diagnostic and most often challenging management dilemma. Antimicrobial therapy very much depends on the type of organisms involved and host co-morbidities do have a detrimental effect on the outcome.

The main aim of this talk is to review the most up to date literature in relation to the diagnosis, management and avoiding complications in devastating hand and wrist infections.

The talk uses a case-based discussion method to highlight the difficulties in day-to-day practice when dealing with these infections.

At the end of the talk, the audience are expected to have a better understanding of these infections and have a management algorithm helping them in their clinical practice.

    Mr Rouin Amirfeyz
    Consultant Hand, Wrist and Elbow Surgeon, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust

    Mr Amirfeyz completed his higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics in Bristol. During this time he advanced his experience in upper limb surgery, with specific interest in elbow, wrist and hand surgery. After the FRCS (Trauma & Orth) exam he took sub-specialty training in Nottingham (hand & wrist) and Sheffield (elbow surgery).

    He was appointed as a consultant upper limb surgeon in Bristol Royal Infirmary since 2011. His practice comprises of predominantly tertiary elective and trauma referrals. These include rheumatoid surgery, osteoarthritis surgery, joint replacement, complex fracture management, arthroscopy and sports surgery.

    He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and has authored a number of key chapters in orthopaedic textbooks.

    He has a special interest in teaching and is a faculty member of a number of cadaveric courses for hand, wrist and elbow surgery. He also runs an annual Bristol elbow cadaveric trauma course.
