The IChemE Mining and Minerals Special Interest Group (SIG) warmly welcomes you to join them as Dr Nadira Barkatullah, Director of Economics at Aurecon, discusses the economic impact on Hunter Valley region due to the closure of Liddell and Bayswater power plants. Nadira is currently using this as a case study and will present the following key points.
- Both power plants are strategic to the region, they are black coal and the production from these plants meets more than 35% of the electricity needs of New South Wales.
- They have provided secure employments for more than 4 decades, employing more than 600 people.
- Closure of such a strategic asset will have an economic impact on region: what are the challenges and opportunities?
- Challenges are loss of growth, employment and income.
- Opportunities is how can the site (after the plants are decommissioned) be utilised for
industrial development that can contribute to the regional growth.
- What are lesson learnt? as the region is gearing for such a strategic asset transition.
