Choanoflagellates are the closest living relatives of animals. These single-celled protists express diverse animal genes, such as kinases, and are therefore a compelling system for studying ancestral functions of animal gene families. The emergence of high throughput techniques in academic settings has opened new opportunities for scientists to profile and characterize such biological systems.

In this webinar, researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University show how choanoflagellates can be used in a core facility to identify novel regulators of cell biology and present a use case of how StratoMineR could be useful for data analytics. They show how their approach can enable the discovery of small molecule regulators of choanoflagellate biology, including those that inhibit cell proliferation and colony formation in Salpingoeca rosetta, a model choanoflagellate.

Florentine (Flora) Rutaganira is a new Assistant Professor at Stanford University in the Departments of Biochemistry and Developmental Biology and a former postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. Flora and her group, the FUNR lab, use chemical tools to decipher the roles of signaling networks in multicellular origins. They specialize in the pharmacologic dissection of kinase function in choanoflagellates, single-celled organisms that are the closest living relatives of animals.

Mary West has been the Director of two shared facilities on the UC Berkeley campus for twelve years. She has worked in industry performing phenotypic screening and compound profiling before transferring her cell development and HTS/HCS knowhow to assisting UCB graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff on their own projects, whether just multi-conditional analysis or true siRNA or CRISPR/Cas9 arrayed screens. Through this work, she has enjoyed assisting scientists with a wide variety of model systems and works to provide support.
