Why is it so important for First Nations students to see themselves reflected in the books they read? And what can all students gain from engaging with authentic First Nations stories and perspectives?

Join author Dr Jared Thomas and educator & author Cara Shipp as they share personal reflections and explore the powerful role that First Nations texts play in literacy development, identity, belonging and wellbeing.

This webinar will discuss how diverse literature helps children see themselves and others in meaningful ways, fostering empathy, understanding and respect. Participants will learn how incorporating First Nations voices and stories into classroom reading can create safer, more inclusive learning environments while supporting meaningful conversations about Country, culture and community.

Dr Jared Thomas
Author & Research Fellow
Dr Jared Thomas is a Nukunu person of the Southern Flinders Ranges who grew up in Port Augusta. Jared works as a curator, archivist and researcher. For the series Yarning Strong, he wrote Dallas Davis, the Scientist and the City Kids, which is based on the way his family works with many people, including scientists, to protect Nukunu traditional lands.

Jared has had novels and short stories published, including the Uncle XBox series (Magabala Books, 2023), and plays produced, including in Kenya and Uganda. He is passionate about making reading, writing and
learning fun for young people.

Jared is a proud ambassador of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Cara Shipp
Author & Educator
Cara Shipp has over ten years' experience in Head of Department, Deputy Principal and Head of School roles in government and independent high schools in the ACT and QLD. She is a Wiradjuri woman and a leading literacy educator specializing in best practice in Indigenous education.

In 2023 Cara published 'Listening from the Heart: Rewriting the Teaching of English with First Nations Voices' (AATE, 2023). She is a leading contributor in the new edition of Yarning Strong, developing the lesson plans and other teacher resources.
