About This Webinar
Together, we will contrast mathematical questions and tasks that focus on simply “doing” mathematics to questions and tasks that evoke mathematical reasoning. It is ALL about the questions.
Questions/tasks at all levels from Kindergarten through Grade 12 will be explored.
For example, we will contrast a question such as:
Read this number: 4023.
to
What numbers take exactly four words to say?
Or a question such as:
Solve: ¾ x – 2 = 5/8 x + 9
to
Do equations with fractions in them usually have whole number solutions or fraction
solutions?

Marian Small, the former Dean of Education at the University of New Brunswick in Canada, writes and speaks about K-12 math around the world. Her focus is on teacher questioning to get at the important math, to include all students, and to focus on critical thinking and creativity.

The Global Math Department began as a group of teachers who knew each other through Twitter, math education blogs and Twitter Math Camp. Since 2012 The Global Math Department community has grown into a multi-faceted group of math educators who love to share their ideas related to teaching and learning mathematics.
