Lab leaders in every organization are faced with making many decisions—big and small, easy and hard. Making decisions is a key responsibility for every lab leader. How we make these decisions has a huge impact on the success of the organization, and on the morale of the team. Learning to make decisions promptly, even before we have all of the information we might want, is a key skill for leaders to develop. The bigger and more difficult the decision, the more information we want, and the more time we desire to make the decision. Unfortunately, many of the most difficult decisions require rapid decision-making and a fair dose of courage. This presentation will use examples to demonstrate the elements of effective decision-making and include time for questions and discussion to explore other difficult decision scenarios.
