Sara Jensen Carr is an Assistant Professor of Architecture, Urbanism, and Landscape and Program Director, Master of Design in Sustainable Urban Environments in the School of Architecture at Northeastern University. Her teaching and research focuses on the connections between landscape, human health, urban ecology, and design. Her current book in progress, The Topography of Wellness: Health and the American Urban Landscape, examines landscape responses to six historical urban epidemics and the implication for current and future practice.
During our conversation, we will chat with her about public health emergencies and the built environment with a special emphasis on how the built environment impacts the health and well-being of children and families. In particular, we will explore how urban density may need to evolve to support the health of populations and what the rapid urbanization in the global south might mean for the flourishing of children and families, especially if social distancing becomes the new norm for the prevention of future epidemics.
