Boon or bane: What will data centers do to the grid?

ABOUT THIS EVENT
Join a free Canary Media webinar with chief reporter Jeff St. John and an expert panel discussing the challenges and opportunities around data center expansion and the U.S. electric grid.

After years of relative stability, the U.S. grid is suddenly facing a surge in power demand. The reason? Tech firms plan to rapidly build new data centers to support their AI ambitions, and that’s going to require incredible amounts of electricity.

If utilities, regulators, and policymakers act rashly to meet these projections — many of which are uncertain and possibly inflated — it could be disastrous. Newly built fossil-gas power plants would cause carbon emissions to rise and utility bills to jump.

Fortunately, there’s plenty that data center developers can do to get the power they need without causing such problems — and that they themselves may benefit from.
