Join Philippa Levine, George Eastman Visiting Professor, for a lecture on her latest research.
The end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century was a tumultuous period: bellicose nations, burgeoning cities, new social formations, controversial and experimental art and literature. The word modern was on many lips, and one of the flashpoints of controversy over whether "being modern" was a good or a bad thing was the naked body. In this talk, Philippa Levine explores the impassioned debates over nakedness that occurred at the time.
