AUSA’s Thought Leaders Webinar series invites you to join us on Wednesday, 8 September 2021, at 14:00 EDT to hear a presentation by Jeffrey Schloesser, author of Marathon War: Leadership in Combat in Afghanistan. Marathon War is a timely examination of leadership during the chaos of combat. MG Schloesser--former commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division and Regional Command-East—will offer his reflections on the war in Afghanistan, highlighting interactions with critical national decisionmakers and showing how tactical decisions can have dramatic strategic impact.

Jeffrey Schloesser
Jeffrey Schloesser is the executive vice president of Strategic Pursuits leading Bell’s Advanced Vertical Lift Center in the nation’s capital, including a team that provides direct support to the advanced vertical lift business development and government affairs teams.
Jeff is a retired Major General with a distinguished 34-year military career to include Commanding the 101st Airborne Division and Regional Command-East in Afghanistan. He served as the Assistant Division Commander of the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq, Deputy Director of the National Counter Terrorism Center and was the first Director of the War on Terror Planning Office within the Department of Defense following 9/11.
Other key military assignments include commanding two Army Special Operations Aviation Battalions, serving at the U.S. Department of State and two Middle East embassies, one as Chief, Office of Military Cooperation, Kuwait. Prior to military retirement, he was the Director of Army Aviation, leading the U.S. Army’s $6 billion Aviation modernization and transformation plan.
Prior to joining Bell, Jeff was the strategic vice president for Sierra Nevada Corporation. Jeff is a graduate of the University of Kansas. He received a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and served as a National Security Fellow at Harvard University’s JFK School of Government. He attended the Wharton School’s Executive Education Program.
He is the immediate past president of the Army Aviation Association of America.

LTG Guy Swan III, U.S. Army Retired

Lieutenant General Guy C. Swan III currently serves as an AUSA Vice President. During more than 35 years of active service he commanded at every level through Army Service Component Command. A career armor/cavalry officer, his general officer assignments included Commanding General, United States Army North/Fifth Army; Commanding General, United States Army Military District of Washington and Commander, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region; Commanding General, 7th Army Training Command, United States Army Europe/Seventh Army; Chief of Staff and Director of Operations, Multi-National Force-Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom; Director of Operations, United States Northern Command; and Chief of Army Legislative Liaison.

General Swan's other key assignments included Commander, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment; Assistant Deputy Director for Strategy and Policy for the Joint Staff; and Deputy Operations Officer for the 1st Armored Division during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

A 1976 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, General Swan holds a Master of Military Art and Science degree from the United States Army's School of Advanced Military Studies. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University and was a National Security Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

General Swan is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Aspen Institute Homeland Security Group, and the FEMA National Advisory Council. He is also a Certified Emergency Manager(CEM) and a Certified Protection Professional (CPP), board certified in security management.

General Swan is married to the former Melanie Taylor Curry of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They have two children: Ryan, a US Army lieutenant, and Melissa, a college junior.
