MG Gregg F. Martin, PhD
U.S. Army Retired
Gregg F. Martin, PhD, Major General, U.S. Army (Ret.), served on active duty for thirty-six years and commanded an engineer company, battalion, and the 130th Engineer Brigade in combat during the first year of the Iraq War. He served multiple overseas tours, commanded the Corps of Engineers Northwest Division, was Commandant of the Army Engineer School, commanded Fort Leonard Wood, was Deputy Commanding General of Third U.S. Army / Army Central in the Middle East, Commandant of the Army War College, Ppresident of the National Defense University, and Special Assistant to the Chief of Engineers. He is a qualified Airborne-Ranger-Engineer and Strategist, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (twice), the Bronze Star Medal, and the Combat Action Badge, among others. Martin holds a PhD and two master’s degrees from MIT, master’s degrees in national security strategy from both the Army and Naval War Colleges, and a bachelor’s degree from West Point. He is an ardent mental-health advocate who has lived on the bipolar spectrum most of his life.

Major General Joseph Caravalho, Jr., USA, Ret., MD

Joseph Caravalho, Jr., M.D., leads The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF), a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1983 and authorized by the U.S. Congress, whose mission is to partner to advance medicine for the mutual benefit of military and civilian health. As President and CEO, Dr. Caravalho guides the strategic vision for HJF and its global workforce in pursuit of its vital mission.
MG Caravalho culminated his 38-year military career as the Army Deputy Surgeon General and then as the Joint Staff Surgeon, serving as the chief medical advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Clinically, Dr. Caravalho held positions as a staff internist, nuclear medicine physician, and cardiologist. Operationally, he served as medical officer in the 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group; Joint Special Operations Command; 75th Ranger Regiment; U.S. Army Special Operations Command; and XVIII Airborne Corps. He also commanded the 28th Combat Support Hospital.
He has two combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving as the senior medical officer for both Multi-National Force-Iraq and Multi-National Corps-Iraq. He then served in succession as the Commanding General for the Army’s Southern Regional Medical Command (RMC) and Brooke Army Medical Center; Northern RMC; and the Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick, MD.
Dr. Caravalho graduated with a medical doctorate from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 1983. He also has a BA in math from Gonzaga University, as well as a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. He completed an internal medicine residency, as well as both nuclear medicine and cardiology fellowships, and was board-certified in all three. In 2019 he received an honorary doctor of laws from Gonzaga University.

Nzinga Curry
DIRECTOR, EDUCATION & PROGRAMS
Nzinga A. Curry has been with the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) since 2005 and worked her way up to Director within the Education & Program directorate in 2017. She leads a team of six who work to inform and educate members and other stakeholders on the nature and character of land warfare and the U.S. Army. This is done by undertaking research projects, hosting programs, podcast and activities, and publishing and distributing a wide variety of educational materials. Loving her role, which comes naturally as an Army brat and wife of an Air Force veteran, she understands the important role of the military and defense community and is instrumental in carrying out the Army message.

Ms. Curry is a 2009 graduate of Trinity Washington University, earning her Master of Arts’ degree in Intercultural Communication. In 2000, she graduated from Towson University, earning her bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication.

Ms. Curry is passionate about education, but not only at AUSA, as she is an adjunct-instructor for a community college.
