Revision of IPC 4552A, released in August, 2017, has caused much insecurity within the electronics industry (OEMs, PCB manufacturers and chemical suppliers).

The nickel hyper-corrosion evaluation is a primary example of this. Misinterpretations of this evaluation may lead to falsely negative judgements and to the rejection of perfectly functioning ENIG production. This can be verified by the fact that production that has been acceptable for decades could now be classified as rejectable because of the misinterpretation of the new IPC 4552A specification.

Find out how Atotech Group, as a leading chemical supplier, fulfils IPC 4552A standard for Ni corrosion evaluation with its high advanced ENIG process.
  • Background: basic understanding of latest IPC 4552A standard; principle mechanism of immersion type Au bath and Ni corrosion appearances characteristics.
  • Key changes and limitations: hyper corrosion rating and use; correlation of Ni corrosion rating vs. proper soldering.
  • Latest developments and outlook: new regulations coming with IPC 4552A and available solution (Atotech high advanced ENIG process).
