Keeping schools safe is a team effort that involves juvenile probation officers. This on-demand webinar will provide juvenile probation officers (JPOs) and other school safety personnel with an understanding of the probation officer’s role on school safety teams and their involvement in developing school safety plans. It will also highlight key resources available to support the implementation of those plans.

Tribal Program Grants Manager, APPA
Mark Dyea is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna and Disabled Veteran. Mark is the Tribal Grants Manager for the American Probation and Parole Association where he collaborates with Tribes to secure training and technical assistance in program planning, implementation, and enhancement. Mark has 20 years of Community Supervision and Treatment Court experience. During this time, he worked for the Pueblo of Laguna’s Probation & Parole Services for over ten years as a Probation Officer, Wellness Court Coordinator, Program Manager, and co-founded the Pueblo’s Community Wellness Court program and served as its Co-Coordinator for seven years. Mark has also worked as a Case Manager for the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Specialty Courts and Coordinator for the Pueblo of San Felipe Healing to Wellness Court. Mark served as a Sr. Consultant for the NADCP Tribal Healing to Wellness Court Planning Initiative and as faculty for TLPI. As a consultant Mark has worked with numerous jurisdictions across the country to develop and enhance Treatment Courts. Over the course of his career Mark as collaborated with multiple jurisdictions, including State, Federal, and Tribal entities, to improve community supervision outcomes and intergovernmental relationships.

Grants Program Analyst, APPA
Gwyn Kaitis, MA, is a Program Analyst with the American Probation and Parole Association. She graduated from Southern Illinois University and has worked in the field of domestic violence for over 20 years, advocating on policy and legislative issues for survivors of domestic violence. She has served as Chair of the New Mexico Intimate Partner Violence Death Review Team and has provided training on domestic violence on safety planning, traumatic brain injury in survivors, and other topics. She was previously a trainer for the Chicago Police Academy.

School Resource Officer, Bureau of Indian Affairs - Office of Justice Services, Northern Pueblos Agency
Officer Joel Dyea has served as a law enforcement professional for over five years with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and has spent the last three years as the School Resource Officer for the Northern Pueblos Agency in New Mexico. Officer Dyea served as Dispatcher for the BIA Southern Pueblos Agency for 18 months prior to attending the U.S. Indian Police Academy in Artesia, NM, where he is a proud graduate of Class 172.
Officer Dyea is a certified Instructor for Active Threat response for both law enforcement and civilians. Officer Dyea is also a certified D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T. Instructor and serves as a Field Training Officer and Armor for his agency. Officer Dyea has dedicated his career to fostering safe learning environments and building positive with the youth and his community.
Officer Dyea currently serves as the President of the New Mexico School Resource Officer Association, where he continues his commitment to improving safety, training, and collaboration among school-based officers across the State.

Senior Research Associate, Institute for Intergovernmental Research
Worked as a senior research associate with the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR) and project coordinator with the Bureau of Justice Assistance Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Program, in which IIR provides specialized training and technical assistance for law enforcement who work in schools and/or with school age populations. Prior to this position, she worked with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s (OJJDP) Opioid Affected Youth Initiative, in which IIR provides technical assistance in support of more than 30 sites. Experienced Program Advisor with a demonstrated history of working in the education management industry. Served as Program Director for Gang Intervention Focusing on Families & Trauma Supports (GIFFTS) and Wraparound Frayser (WAF), both of which are programs within the Center for Health in Justice Involved Youth. Incorporated trauma-informed resources into an approach to gang intervention and prevention, along with wraparound approach that involves community outreach and engagement. Built relationships with key community stakeholders that share the mission and vision of the work. Spent over twenty years impacting the field of education at district & state levels. Project Advisor for Shelby County Schools where work involved facilitating student service programs for 24 middle schools within Shelby County Schools. These services included gang intervention and prevention through Gang Reduction Assistance Saving Society’s Youth, G.R.A.S.S.Y., which implemented services aligned with the Comprehensive Gang Model. This role provided the opportunity to provide a safe learning environment for the students at the Shelby County School District, as well as an opportunity for community outreach through collaborations with high-yielding partners. Served as a School Improvement Coordinator, as well as served as an Education Consultant for the State of Tennessee Department of Education, guiding twenty-three, West Tennessee School Districts through the process of building educator capacity through targeted, differentiated academic supports resulting in student readiness. A Certified Family Support Specialist, who advocates for children and families to inspire a sense of hope, resiliency and recovery. Enjoys opportunities that allow her to have a positive impact on the community. Currently serves on the Memphis & Shelby County Juvenile Justice Board and the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative Committee. Hosts and produces a weekend radio show, Doctor 2 Doctor- In the Chatroom.
