About
Meeting evolving security requirements like CNSA 2.0 and FIPS 140-3 is becoming a critical challenge for satellite systems, especially when deployments must remain secure for decades with limited ability to update. Design decisions made early in the architecture directly impact certification timelines, long-term security, and system maintainability.

This session focuses on practical approaches to building secure satellite systems. We'll explore how to integrate compliant cryptography, secure boot, and prepare for post-quantum threats without increasing system complexity or delaying deployment.

This session will cover:

- How to approach FIPS 140-3 in satellite systems, including strategies to reduce rework and avoid delays in certification
- How to incorporate CNSA 2.0 and post-quantum cryptography (PQC), including when and how to use hybrid approaches in constrained environments
- How to implement secure boot and firmware update protection for systems that cannot be easily accessed or patched
- How to design scalable key management and a hardware-rooted chain of trust across long-life missions

Jacob Barthelmeh
Senior Software Engineer, wolfSSL Inc.
Born and raised in Montana, I grew up enjoying tinkering with electronics and mechanical devices. My first entry into university was for an electrical engineering program – after the first year I knew it was not the best fit and took multiple years afterwards working odd jobs. After reading the book “The Most Human Human” and observing my enjoyment of solving how to solve a problem, I was led to come to Bozeman, MT to study computer science. Dusting off my academic skills and excelling in the computer science program. While searching for computer science internships at MSU (Montana State University) I ended up connecting with Chris here at wolfSSL and becoming an intern. Which eventually led to me coming on board as a full time employee at wolfSSL. I’ve been fortunate to be with wolfSSL now for over 10 years, seeing the growth of the company and working in the cyber security industry.
