Echocardiography is currently the most widely used non-invasive imaging test for the evaluation of known or suspected heart disease. It is the most widely used non-invasive imaging modality within clinical cardiology, as the information it provides is extensive and immediate as well as cost-effective, non-invasive, and accessible.

It involves a wide variety of techniques, both conventional and advanced. The conventional techniques are M-mode, 2-dimensional / B-mode imaging, pulsed, continuous-wave, and color Doppler imaging. Tissue Doppler imaging, strain by speckle echo, 3D echo, contrast echo, are some of the advanced techniques while stress echo and trans-esophageal echo are the specialized procedures.

Doctors from many medical specialties request echocardiography as part of their assessment of patients with a wide range of pathology.
