After a strong go-go period following the short and sharp downturn of March 2020, the stock market has entered a period of moderation and correction – and that trend is certainly showing in Canadian ETF flows this year.

According to the latest available statistics from the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC), Canadian ETFs have seen net inflows of $16 billion this year up to June – a stark contrast to the net redemptions of $3.5 billion from mutual funds, but tepid compared to the $32 billion in ETF inflows for the same period in 2021.

Behind that slowdown are concerns over record highs in inflation and aggressive hiking of interest rates by central banks, which have reset expectations of returns and growth across asset classes, sectors, investment styles, and themes.

So what's next for the ETF industry? Are there any strategies or asset classes that investors and advisors can pack into their portfolio to snatch opportunity from the current risks? What investment mega-themes should they expect to remain resilient – or gain traction? Will we see a tipping point in the saga of active vs. passive management?

In its next Advisor Connect event, Wealth Professional is bringing together a panel of four industry insiders and leaders from the ETF industry. Showcasing investment expertise in passive products, disruptive innovation, global equities, and alternative strategies, just to name a few areas, this is a must-attend event for advisors hoping to navigate the next phase of uncertainty.
