Dr Jacqui McRae
Research Hub Manager, ARC Graphene Research Hub at The University of Adelaide
Jacqui is the Manager of the ARC Graphene Research Hub, a collaborative venture between 5 industry partners and 6 universities, based at the University of Adelaide. She completed a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Swinburne University, Melbourne, during the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and spent many months discovering how not to prepare job applications. She finally secured a postdoctoral position in 2009 at the Australian Wine Re, search Institute, which provided invaluable hindsight as to how she could have been more successful with other job applications. After nearly a decade of investigating wine macromolecules and achieving the lofty title of Senior Research Scientist, Jacqui completed a Diploma of Project Management and decided to leave active research in favour of research program management. She joined the University of Adelaide School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials in 2019 to manage the ARC Graphene Research Hub.
For the past few years, one of Jacqui’s key roles has been to recruit researchers to the team. This has given her insider knowledge as to what recruiters look for when hiring and how good graduates may miss out on positions simply from not highlighting their skills or from providing too much or not enough details. She has now taken her years of experience in recruitment and the hindsight from her own experiences in preparing job applications to help others prepare successful job applications.
