About this Conference

Regardless of your political views on the drug, legal or otherwise, it is just that, a drug. As countries around the world move deeper into potential legalisation of weed, it becomes increasingly important to understand the drug from a medical and engineering perspective. As we dig into this topic, we encourage you to leave politics at the door, today is just going to be about good old science and engineering.

This session will discuss class cultivation and extraction methods to develop cannabinoid medicines that offer safe and effective therapeutic benefits to patients and how chemical engineers influence this. Our presenter will speak of their experiences working in this unique field and what the future holds for this industry.

Richard Hume

Project Engineer, Cann Group Limited

During university, Richard undertook bachelor's degrees in pharmaceutical science and chemical engineering, pursuing a passion for chemistry, biology, physics, and maths. Beginning his journey in industry Richard joined a metal analysis laboratory as a technician. Richard used this role as a platform to move into the organic analysis sector as analytical chemist for the NATA approved illicit substance screening tests using a UPLC-MS to identify analytes for various government body investigations.

Richard then began his role at Pharmaceutical company Cann Group Limited as a cultivator growing medicinal cannabis. His role emerged into cGMP cannabis resin manufacturing operating a supercritical CO2 extraction vessel for THC and CBD concentrate. Richard has project managed the design, demolition and construction of the new QC Analytical and Microbiological laboratories facilities and utilities . He is now commissioning the procured equipment at Cann Group's to commence laboratory operations all intended for cGMP certification with the TGA.

Krisztina Emmerson

Production Manager

Krisztina holds a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering, specializing in measuring techniques and equipment. She has over 30 years’ experience in quality control across a wide range of industries – from medicinal herbs to explosives.

With extensive project and operations management experience, Krisztina has also worked in aquafeed, pet food and has led disciplines in environmental research. As a Production Manager she is responsible for all import and production related quality assurance, compliance including supply management and distribution of medicinal cannabis products.

Cameron Suen

UNSW

Cameron is a current Chemical Engineering and Chemistry student at UNSW (est. 2024). Her university career is underpinned by a combination of university experiences from volunteering to society work. In particular, she has been involved with the faculty society CEUS in the sponsorships, treasury and industry divisions. She is currently undertaking a Taste of Research program looking at the sustainable electrolysis of seawater to produce hydrogen.
