Grading and Assessment (and more): Where Do We Go From Here?

About This Webinar

There is no denying it—teaching is different now. We all feel it. And we see it manifest in our schools and communities, as well as in state and national politics. So, at this moment of inflection in K12 education, where do we go from here? Join me as we ask some big questions, share our collective experience, and begin to reimagine the next phase of our educational practice. Let's chat about grading and assessment, culturally and historically responsive pedagogy, and steps we can take to ensure our classrooms cultivate genius and joy for all students.

I am a mother, wife and math teacher. I currently teach at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA and my favorite class to teach is statistics! This is my 27th year of teaching and I am a Desmos fellow and Desmos certified presenter. @mathteacher24 is my twitter handle and I blog at mathteacher24.blogspot.com. I have several tech related videos for stat and TI-NSpire at www.youtube.com/mathteacher24. Feel free to ask me questions about National Board Certification (renewed in 2015). I also enjoy singing, reading and staying fit using workouts from Beachbody (P90X3/TurboFire/21DFX).

Nolan Fossum has been a mathematics teacher and leader for over two decades. His teaching experience ranges from middle grades through university. Nolan began facilitating professional learning experiences for teachers with the Irvine Math Project in 2004. Nolan authored a chapter in the 2022 NCTM publication “Success Stories from Catalyzing Change.”

Nolan’s greatest takeaway from that time is that student engagement and motivation are highest when teachers center culture and relationship building. Nolan loves conversations about disrupting, dismantling, and reimagining the school experience and especially the mathematics classroom. All students are brilliant and we have the power and charge to help every student realize their genius.

Global Math Department webinar platform hosts Grading and Assessment (and more): Where Do We Go From Here?
The Global Math Department began as a group of teachers who knew each other through Twitter, math education blogs and Twitter Math Camp. Since 2012 The Global Math Department community has grown into a multi-faceted group of math educators who love to share their ideas related to teaching and learning mathematics. We recognize that as educators we are charged with promoting equity and access within mathematics instruction. In addition, we believe it is crucial that teachers be provided with quality resources and ideas that they can use immediately with their students. Lively and friendly conversations in our weekly webinars encourage all participants to share and continue to grow as educators.
