FutureScot Webinar – ‘The power of video in BGE and Senior Phase education’

ABOUT
Remote or ‘blended’ forms of digital teaching and learning are fast embedding themselves across the curriculum in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the current period of Term 4 lockdown, The Scottish Government has commissioned Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Education (HMIE)/Education Scotland to conduct a review of digital teaching and learning approaches across the country.

Much progress has undoubtedly been made in the last 12 months, in response to a public health emergency, but the objective of the exercise is to better understand what is working locally in schools – at primary and secondary level – and to inform best practice standards and guidance for teachers, parents/carers and learners.

Part of that challenge is to understand the balance of provision, in terms of what constitutes digital teaching and learning pedadogy, and to move the conversation on from being solely about live delivery of timetabled activities: in practice, that means a focus on how traditional classroom learning can be ‘repackaged’ into consumable and highly engaging content media, ‘on demand’ at any time.

In this webinar we are going to explore the power of video to inspire learning through engaging recorded content as part of a rich National e-Learning Offer (NeLO) in Scotland. Working with leading industry partner ClickView, which hosts the West OS content as part of that offer, the objective of the exercise is to understand the current needs and wishes of education providers and the longer term implications for a return to in-class teaching.

We will use the opportunity of engaging with education officers and directors of learning, head teachers and digital education champions to investigate three topic areas, which can be broadly categorised as 1. The current context: to what extent has the curriculum been digitised – what has worked well for teachers and learners, and the converse? 2. A more detailed discussion of how to successfully integrate video and recorded content into Broad General Education (BGE) and Senior Phase curriculum delivery? 3. Imagining the future: how delivery of on-demand video education will continue to shape education in the future.
