The course is designed to cater for two types of participants; one who intends to understand the various elements involved in systematic reviews and one who wants to complete a Systematic Review/s. The course and additional online learning material cover areas including: question formulation, protocol, developing a plan to conduct your review, PRISMA guidelines, and critical appraisal. Aspects of meta-analysis and synthesis of non-numerate data are also highlighted. Specifically, the workshop seeks to promote the use of evidence synthesis for informed health decision making, while providing information, advice and mentorship on evidence synthesis.

Prof. Orwa is a Certified Knowledge Manager. She is currently executing the duties of Deputy Director, Resource Development & Knowledge Management (RD&KM) at the Kenya Medical Research Institute. Entrusted with the responsibility of overall leadership and coordination of matters KM & KT she has appreciated the progressive networking and partnerships that continue to build capacity of health researchers in KM & KT.

Her vision is to see a knowledge-sharing culture and environment that contributes to KEMRI’s success in the Translation and communication of research evidence to inform health policy, strategies and practices.

Chief Research Officer - Kenya Medical Research Institute

Charles Obonyo is a Chief Research Officer (since 2013) at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, based at the Centre for Global Health Research in Kisumu. He has a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology, MSc in Clinical Epidemiology and Diploma in clinical medicine. He spent a year (2000-2001) at the New England Medical Centre, Boston (USA) as an NIH Fogarty Research Fellow to complete a fellowship on the design of clinical research and evidence synthesis. His scientific research contributes to an improved understanding of the epidemiology of paediatric malaria, efficacy of antimalaria drugs, systematic reviews (of health interventions) and the role of artemisinin-based combination therapies in the preventive treatment of schistosomiasis. He has published close to 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and edited two book chapters.

Research and Policy Analyst

Leila is a Public Health specialist with speciality in Epidemiology. She has over 15 years’ experience in health research with a wide range of experiences nationally and internationally. She has published over 25 articles worldwide in a renowned journal with a major focus on evidence synthesis in the health sector. She has a wealth of experience as a systematic review author and a mentor under the Cochrane Africa Network where she helps review authors on different aspects of systematic reviews.
