Hassan Akmal is the executive director of career and professional development at the University of California San Diego. With over 30 years of experience in higher education and nearly 20 years of senior leadership in career services, Akmal is a global thought leader and a pioneer in career and life design. Before his current role, he led an ambitious reimagination of career services at UCLA’s Career Center and served as the inaugural executive director of industry relations and career strategies at Columbia University, where he founded the award-winning Career Design Lab. His TEDx Talk, “The Power to Design a Life You Love,” has garnered over 1.7 million views.

Akmal is the author of multiple books. His latest, The AI Mosaic of Career & Life Design: Design Your Future Self with Agility, Precision, and Purpose in the Age of Superintelligence, releases May 7 and explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with personal, career, and professional development. He also serves on several prominent international boards.

He has held key leadership roles at University of Illinois, Michigan State University, GE, Whirlpool Corp, AbbVie, and Yello. Currently, he serves as a member of the 12twenty partnerships team working globally with universities and employers. He also leads a 4-year USAID project in Africa, overseeing the launch of career centers at universities across Mozambique to support workforce and economic development.
